As the death toll approaches 400,000 Peace is not on the horizon for the broken and war weary people of Syria.
Don’t think for a minute the mental and physical pain won’t deepen as this unimaginable war could continue for another decade.
Does anyone remember what started this bloody campaign?
The Assad family has been running the show in Syria for decades belonging to a minority tribe or sect called Alemites, an offshoot or subset of the Shiites. The overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim country wasn’t going to take the repressive treatment any longer and protested against the government.
So they rise to overthrow Bashar al-Assad and found he had friends in high places to compliment his national army in Iran and proxy Hezbollah and other militias. All you have to do is identify a disagreement in the region and Iran will show up, promote or defend Shiism, so will the Emirates and Saudis although lacking in manpower the latter have funds to buy weapons and fighters to counter with its brand of extreme Sunni Islam.
With all that cash and expensive weapons circling around guess who shows up and joins the party: Islamic State or ISIS. They are fighting to establish a Sunni Islamic Caliphate and believe me they have no love for Christians, Yazidis or Shia Islam. It boils down to one big free for all in Poor Syria.
ISIS is chopping heads and committing all kinds of atrocities while gaining ground big time, so Assad turns to Iran for more help and along with Iranian Revolutionary Guards come Shia recruits from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
But ISIS and the opposition maintains the upper hand until Russia enters the melee assisting the government. The U.S. enters Syria to destroy ISIS, to control the oilfields and protect The Kurds who battling Assad forces and Turkey at the same time. Israel is bombing Iran and Hezbollah weapons targeting the Jewish State.
If Syria sounds like a giant mess, it is and world powers have fallen short in stopping the carnage that is creating famine and millions of refugees throughout the region, especially in Turkey.
The President of Turkey Raycip Erdogan send troops into Syria to protect its borders from Kurds, Assad forces and ISIS. But he doesn’t stop there, continuing into Iraq bombing the Kurds, who are fighting for an independent state called Kurdistan.
Bashar and his wife are battling COVID-19 but are maintaining power as death and destruction continue. The real winners will be who gets the Lion share of Contracts to rebuild Syria when the smoke clears. Russia and Iran are in it to win it and the Syrian people are the real losers.
May God have Mercy on the Syrian People.
