Once again my Alma Mater is in the news for all the wrong reasons.
Allegations of financial improprieties against Dr. Austin Lane may have led to his removal as President of Texas Southern University, a large predominately Black University located in Houston’s Third Ward. Students are upset with upper management about his suspension without giving a clear reason.
TSU Board of Regents placed Lane on Paid Administrative Leave Friday by a 5-4 vote, pending an investigation from the audit committee as he denied any wrongdoings, and was not told of the Regents meeting to remove him. The allegations may or may not have been in reference to the disappearance of Funds connected to the Admission process. Lane said he expects to be reinstated or paid for the duration of his contract.
Dr. Priscilla Slade was fired as president in 2006 for spending University funds (in excess of $500,0000) for home improvement and personal use. She was indicted on four felony counts, and although the trial ended in a “hung jury” she pleaded “no contest” in lieu of being retried, and agreed to 10 years of deferred adjudication, repayment of more than a $100,000 and community service.
