Human Rights Should be Fully Restored
Not only should the internally displaced people of Tawergha be allowed to return home, they should also be fully compensated for the brutal campaign that led to mass murder and torture of many of its citizens.
Its been six years since the militias of Misrata attacked Tawergha driving out its Black Libyan residents and turning this once productive city into a ghost town. Now Misrata politicians and militias are in charge of their homeland and it doesn’t appear they will allow their return.
Located in Western Libya about thirty miles south of Misrata, a coastal city down the road from Tripoli, Tawerghan fighters supported Colonel Muammar Gaddafi during the August 2011 revolution and were accused of committing atrocious crimes against Gaddafi’s arch enemy, the Misratans.
To simplify the situation ethnic cleansing and genocide were committed against the Tawerghan people, according to human rights agencies for supporting Gaddafi during the Libyan Conflict, and racism due to their Black African ancestry.
With Gaddafi gone and no one to protect them, many were killed and the rest fled with the clothes on their backs in order to escape death at the hands of tormentors.
Humanitarian Aid For Tawerghans
For six years the Tawergha issue was Humanitarian in scope with much of the population living in the streets, and in shelters, but with the help of some aid organizations they were able to survive.
More aid is needed because a recent effort to allow their return fell apart as the Government of National Accord in the West and the Libyan National Army in the East, along with human rights agencies failed the people of Tawergha once again. The GNA is supported by Turkey and Qatar, while the LNA has the support of Egypt and United Arab Emirates as they fight for control of this massive oil producing nation.
While brutal wars continue in Libya, the helpless people of Tawergha can only dream of peace and justice.
