Texas Southern University Cancels John Cornyn Speech Due to Students Outcry

It didn’t phase me one bit when it was revealed that US Senator John Cornyn, scheduled to speak before graduates at my Alma Mater Texas Southern University, was abruptly canceled due to his pathetic anti-Obama and pro Trump record.

Students at the historically Black University made it known loud and clear that Cornyn, a republican who represents the district that TSU resides in, has a history of attacking the Obama Administration and pushing forward Trump’s agenda. He was scheduled to speak on a Saturday this month and was notified a day before that he was off the program. Congresspersons Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green, representing the Greater Houston Area in the US House were allowed to address the graduates. All three were originally set to speak at the commencement exercises.

Cornyn and his good buddy Mitch M’Connell fought tooth and nails to deny Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland and up and down vote in the judiciary committee or the Senate, which led to his downfall. He once professed that George W. Bush nominee for the 11th U.S. circuit Court of Appeals William Pryor Jr., should received a yes or no vote. “Any nominee” who comes to the Senate deserves an up and down vote.

But when it came to vote on Garland, he said “There should not be a hearing in the judiciary committee for anyone that the president nominates,” referring to President Obama.

Cornyn has voted repeatedly to repeal and defund Obama Care, as he proudly displays on his website.

He boast of cosponsoring the American Liberty Restoration Act, which would eliminate the Federal mandate requiring individuals to purchase government prescribed health insurance or pay a fee.

Also, he cosponsored the American Job Protection Act , that would spur American job creation by striking the federal mandate requiring employers to offer government prescribed health insurance.

In the United States and Canada cities that limits cooperation with the national government effort to enforce immigration are known as sanctuary cities. Cornyn   cosponsored and voted in favor of the Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act, which prohibits sanctuary jurisdiction from receiving federal funds under the Community Development Block Grant Program and the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program. He supported President Trump on the issue of illegal immigration.

Immediately after moving into the oval office President Trump made true on his pledge to crackdown on illegal immigration, by doubling down on the immigration laws already on the books. He issued an executive order to cut funding for major cities that protects illegal immigrants under sanctuary cities. He referred to Mexican immigrants as rapist and drug dealers and immediately he would build a wall to keep them out. He said that Mexico would pay for the wall. Immediately the government of Mexico refuted his statement, saying they would not pay for his wall.

Trump wants to amend Nafta (North American Free Trade Agreement) that has great economic benefits for Mexico, a large exporter to the US without tariffs. He calls it “the world deal ever.”

John Cornyn needs to spend more time trying to improve ObamaCare rather than repeal and replace it. Education is another issue of concern in our community.
