Noted civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis said president elect Donald Trump is not a “legitimate president” during a recent interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd, and he won’t attend his inauguration.
The Georgia Congressman said “the Russians help elect (Trump) and destroyed the candidacy of Hilary Clinton in the process.”
The president elect wasted little time in firing back, referring to Rep Lewis as “all talk and no action,” adding that his district was crime infested and he should spend more time fixing the problems.
If the Russians hacked the Democratic National Committee, releasing thousands of stolen emails that were damaging to Hilary and the DNC, in conjunction with Trump, then I agree with Lewis: Trump is not a “legitimate president.”
Trump said he is president because he won the overwhelming majority of electoral votes, by concentrating on key states, where Hilary failed to spend enough time campaigning.
FBI director James Comey is in the hot seat for knowing and not notifying former DNC head Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, about Russian hacking last summer. She had to resigned because of the scandal that led to intense criticism of Clinton’s careless use of emails. Schultz chided Comey recently for withholding hacking information and stopped short of calling for his resignation. The Democrats are accusing Comey of making damaging emails public to hurt Clinton, and pave way for a Trump victory.
Obama’s chief of staff Denis McDonough joined the discussion on CNN with Jake Tapper, declining to legitimize Trump’s presidency, but said President Barack Obama considered him “freely elected.” The idea that he was freely elected doesn’t sit well with 23 House Democrats so far, who will not be in attendance during his inauguration.
Lewis might be on to something HUGE.
Activists around the country are picking up steam to have a mass protest on Friday, when president elect Donald Trump takes office. The equal rights legend was a Core Freedom Rider during the sixties, and has the scars from the beatings. Lewis is admired and reviled at the same time. His critics accuse him of being a rabblerouser, one who instigates trouble between the races. Maybe it’s because he stands up for what’s right, using protest and boycott as a tool to promote equality. Lewis, a democrat whose district includes most of Atlanta has been in office since 1987, and there are loud cries for Congress to open an investigation to see if Russian President Vladimir Putin conspired with president elect Donald Trump to influence the last presidential election.
Maybe John Lewis should be heading that Committee.
