When Gov. Chris Christie realized his campaign for President was sinking fast he abandon ship and clung to Donald Trump, in hopes of becoming a vice president, or a security guard for the Trumpster.
Right before bailing he inflicted an effective body blow to Marco Rubio, accusing him of being overly scripted in his criticism of Barack Obama and others, and not showing up for votes in the senate. After losing big time in New Hampshire Christie suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump, much to the chagrin of his national finance co-chair Meg Whitman.
“An astonishing display of political opportunism” is how the Hewlett-Packard CEO described his endorsement of Trump. “Donald Trump is unfit to be President. He is a dishonest demagogue who plays on our worst fears.”
She was right in the sense that Trump is not fit to be president but she may have over estimated Christie’ qualifications as governor of New Jersey. He was pretending to be a conservative when in fact he is an individualist with moderate views. In other words Chris Christie was looking out for Chris Christie and not the voters.
I blame Whitman for not properly vetting the Governor. All she had to do was read up on the Traffic Scandal that occurred under his watch in 2013. Officially known as the George Washington Bridge Traffic Jam, it was designed to create a traffic jam by closing down a major travel route as payback for a Fort Lee Mayor who refused to back Christie. A major traffic jam it did create, and some are speculating Christie knew about the plan as it happened. He was not incriminated in the scandal although an official at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges. What made the scandal even worse was that several Christie staffers said the so-called scandal was part of a traffic study.
Whitman isn’t the only supporter that got played by the Governor. The New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher Joseph McQuaid is trying frantically to walk back their endorsement of Christie.
“Boy were we wrong. “Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend – and make excuses for the man Christie himself has said was unfit for the presidency, demonstrated how wrong we were. Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.”
Christie should know that his political career is over. After introducing Trump on stage during Super Tuesday Primaries he stood behind him and he looked as if he were from another solar system. I guess he wondered to himself; what am I doing here supporting this guy? For a while I thought he was going to run off stage and head home to New Jersey.
Now Several New Jersey Newspapers are demanding his resignation. All six are owned by Gannett and they are angry with him for endorsing Trump and refusing to answer questions at a recent press conference.
But his support for Trump hasn’t wavered, hoping he becomes President so he can land a position in his cabinet. Vice President is out of the question. Maybe a security guard in one of his casinos.
Chris Christie has no shame.
